A Revolutionary New Design

Gentle on your bike, so you can ride as hard as you like. Even if you can’t get out on the road, you still want to ride your favourite bike, whether that’s a prized S-works, or a much-loved BMX. Previous trainers have tended to use A-frames or wheel-off designs which, no matter how smooth your pedal stroke or how well-dampened the device, will put stress on your bike’s frame. The Matchrider has eliminated this issue with a bold piece of design. Our frame mount is connected by 3 rubberised, aluminium cradles that are attached to your bottom bracket and down tube with nylon straps. They’re fully adjustable, so you can avoid bottle cages, pumps and batteries without difficulty. Better still, the mount isn’t weight-bearing. That job is done by your bike’s own wheels, which rest on a set of rollers at the rear and a cradle at the front. For the first time ever, this means that you can ride as hard as you like on your favourite bike, without worrying about whether your frame is going to suffer, even if you’re pushing over a thousand watts like Robbie.  The rear wheel will be spared as well. The polyurethane rollers are as forgiving as a tarmac road - without the potholes, of course.

What is the Matchrider? 
 

The Matchrider is a revolutionary cycling simulator, which completely reinvents the traditional indoor trainer. It was designed with only one thing in mind: "to be the road". Its unique, breakthrough design, which dispenses with fixed wheel or A-frame constraints, supports natural motion without constraining the rider or their bike. This allows you to enjoy the same biomechanical benefits as you would on the open road, even while you’re riding safely inside. 

 

The Matchrider also possesses unique geometry through equal load bearing and weight distribution across both wheels. The entire bike moves under a rider, effortlessly releasing biomechanical energy from the rear wheel the same way as a bike does on the road. Unlike other interactive products which simulate environments without incorporating true environmental riding conditions, the Matchrider accurately interprets real environments created by Matchfiles. It is CNC precision manufactured from solid billets with an array of proprietary software electronics and calibrated to hundredths of a second, making it the most sophisticated road bike simulator to hit the market.

Our team has worked tirelessly in developing 3 dedicated application modes. Diverse in functionality each mode offers  endless usage possibilities that are a direct result of the Matchriders precision electronics and unique "Matchfiles".

The Matchrider can be used for training, fitness, rehabilitation or even virtual racing. All 3 modes are available for individual use or within networked environments. Sessions can be private either at home and hotel rooms or public such as a franchised gyms or concept fitness stores. There will also be access to global libraries of professionally created (environment) interval files and users will also be aable to create their own files which they can share across social networks. Whether matching or training, the Matchrider can be used on it's own or in grouped training sessions. Training can be available in gyms via closed circuit training environments and in future via virtual racing leagues.  

 

One of the main DIFFERENCES of the Matchrider is the ability to create resistance by manual input control of multiple environmental conditions and as we emphasize the focus on “creating one’s own environment”. This is much different and far superior to simple training programs and is what differentiates the Matchrider from all other “same/same” product/trainers. The Matchrider’s training intervals can be customized with full input access to user weight, bike weight, all wind impact resistance as well as gradient providing access and control of the complete environment. Structured block workouts are also at your fingertips and for further ease we have also created experiences for you. In Matching mode, challenge your performance and skill with that of a pro athlete. Select a competition level matchfile and see if you can keep up with the professionals all the while the Matchrider grades your performance in real time. Beeing graded has never been this fun. Based on your relative weight we create the resistance required to ride as the pro has in the matchfie so if you fall behind we simply drop you down through the grades till you find your level. B grade is 80%, C 60% of the required effort etc. This is an extraordinary feature allowing you to learn how the pros race, think, how they corner, where they apply effort and where they surf, creep and freewheel. All these tactics can be learned at your own level with our grading system. VR it’s the third and most immersive mode. An entirely new world that takes full advantage of the Matchriders true road bike simulation and mechanical design. The precision of the Matchrider translates extremely well in the virtual space as it offers absolute freedom for your Matchworld persona's motion. Front cradle

 

front cradle:


As the Matchrider is designed to have all the weight bearing directly through both wheels it is critical that we have a snug fitting front cradle to support the front wheel. Our first "go to" option was the old fashion book under the front wheel, it has a historical appeal that everyone has come to recognize. However what we found was if the bike isn’t exactly level, the weight distribution is effected and un-strapped there is risk of falling off.

Being completely level (flat) causes torsional twist on a bike due to the angle of the front forks, risking frame damage and as steering cannot be accurately measured there are further technical obstacles for accurate VR3D software interaction. Therefore in terms of what we will demand of a front cradle the correct tilt angle is critical.

Our cradle is fully adjustable to fit tyres ranging from 21mm to 61mm with the side wings designed to grip only the tyre ensuring there is no contact with the rim and therfore no risk of damage.

We wanted one Matchrider to fit the entire family which meant it had to fit any bike. So we designed it to be completely adjustable. A quick and easy process allows you to adjust to any size bike ensuring that the Matchrider can be shared with the entire family. Teaching young people how to ride in the safety of the home is uniquely special and the only limitation here is the ability to ride together as a group. Adjustable for all bikes, from the smallest kids bike to the largest of mountain bikes. A simple slide of the inner tube to fit the wheel base length then a lock nut sets the adjustment in place.

The inner tube is made of a different material to the outer eliminating the need for lubrication. The arm is very strong and can be used as a lever to move the Matchrider around the home. A lifting tilt and push and the Matchrider is on it's wheels to move around the house. Nothing to carry.  


 

 

 
 
Clamping system

 

balance and stability:


 Balancing without forward movement is difficult and the best way to understand this is to try “track standing”. As the rear wheel rotates on any stationary trainer stability will increase from the centrifugal force of the wheel rotation and even more if both wheels are spinning. The  Matchriders’s design has a mechanism to support the bike upright even from the stationary position. It does this via our clamping system whose sole function is to hold your bike upright and support it when leant over.  It is not weight bearing and moves freely up and down with normal frame flex. This together with the give in your tires, ensures zero stress on the frame.  All the weight bearing is naturally supported by the bike frame and ultimately the wheels to the ground.

To ensure that the frame doesn’t slip off, there are (four) rubber pads designed for work with an easy to use ratchet system and in true Matchrider form designed to fit all bike types and be locked in securely. The adjustable straps can be wound to length and finely adjusted to the locking position with the brass ratchet. Made of a woven fabric and coated wire the system is rated to a 150kg rider.  The Matchrider can hold the full side weight of the largest rider, even on a high end carbon race frame without fear of falling or damage to the bike. Total estimate setup is less than 2 minutes and the length of the straps will fit all bike shapes and sizes.


 

 

bottom bracket:


Only the bottom bracket mount and the first rubber are in a fixed positions. They are responsible for wedging the front of the bottom bracket hinge onto the underside and the strap self aligns to the correct position. The other two rubbers are adjustable sliding to any position needed within the rod length making room for the bidden and Di2 batteries. The strap and wire are thin and in most cases can feed under a bidden cage and can equally be positioned between the cages, battery or pump mounts. 



 

"The only exception to this is older version Di2 or EPS batteries which are mounted under the bottom tube or on the bottom bracket. These will obstruct the clamp. Recent versions don’t commonly position batteries here any more". 

 
 
Variable stability

If there is a single design feature that jumps out, it is the way Matchrider supports a bike. In addition to holding in place without any restriction to a bikes natural motion, this patented design feature provides up to 4° sideways movement for safe and natural leaning in exactly the same manner by which it would occur when on the road.  With leaning also comes instability and a need for balance in a manner which accommodates all skill levels. For this we have built in our adjustable, “VST” (variable stability control) feature. Easily selected through our user interface a dedicated motor provides the desired rigidity of the lean. This rigidity ranges from a very stiff A-frame home trainer setting right across the spectrum of extreme loosens to the non assistance feel of rollers. The only exception here being we have in place safety limit of 4 degree lock out. Controlled from the Smart phone app, you can adjust this to the feel that suits.

The default setting is stable so you can get use to the feel of the sideways movement and then progress to your own skill/balance level. The natural resting place of the stability is back to natural/central position and this is achieved by the pre-sprung spring system. Normally with apposing springs they would cancel each other out, we have addressed this via our internal floating mechanism that effectively disengages the uncompressed spring and this continually changes from spring to spring as you rock and sway. Leverage is how we create greater of lesser effective stability.  When the springs are moved closer to the pivot (datum) point then there is less leverage from the pre-compressed springs to resist movement and at the bottom of the central brass block there is a increased ratio for leverage. We have achieve through design the ability to make this adjustable without changing the springs characteristics, by having fixed shaft length regardless of leverage position at the central block.
 


 

 

the pivot points:


The Mathcrider differs from a rock and roll and all other rocking exercise bikes as it pivots from both wheels exactly as how a bike performs on the road. Sideways movement without forward momentum is a difficult sensation to achieve and yet the Matchriders clamp design sole purpose was to exactly achieve this. By supporting the frame in one central point it allows the bike to flex normally as it is designed to do.  When peddling on the right a bike leans left and vice versa, this can only be successfully achieved when the weight is distributed through the wheels and leaning occurs via the bikes frame. All other systems artificially try to replicate this via different if not unnatural pivot points. The Matchrider also has the natural movement that results in the dispersement of the “flex energy” out the rear wheel, as a bike is designed to do. You can see this with the rear wheel movement across the rear roller in our video animation. Other exercise machines and sprung “A frames” all pivot from the rear axle so it is more of a sliding movement, not the true movement of a bike on the road.

Like everything else on the Matchrider, the electronic control system is also custom built. Drawing on a plethora of algorithms the processor constantly crunches numbers and shoots off commands to the various areas of the machine. Custom electronics run the drive roller and a 2nd computer handles all other communications. Designed to work right “out the box” like an ergo machine (without the need to set up accounts or profiles) it connects wirelessly to all iOS & Android smart devices easily converting them to user controllers. A universal power supply also ensures that it can work in any country.

The motor is calibrated to electronic current and will constantly feed back, cadence, left and right peddle strokes, speed and power with never a need for manual calibration. It's computer has onboard solid state memory to store and process Matchfiles lightning fast and a HDMI output for displaying on large TV screens. The HDMI output supports either cable or a wireless dongle and there are 3 USB ports. At your discretion, you can allocate one of the USB ports to charge a smart device or simply attach an Ant+ dongle for third party heart-rate sensor display. As the Matchrider is VR-3D ready from sensor to connectivity there is a third dedicated USB port for further connectivity when VR accessories are retail available. 
 


 

 
 
Rollers

 

the roller system: 


By having a 2 roller system as the connection to the road, they work with the tyre to spread the load and create the best positive connection.  The uniqueness is in it’s precision construction.  The rollers themselves are machined from solid aluminium billet stock with the rubber baked to form a perfectly balanced surface at a diameter chosen to balance the speed of rotation and arch of the bike wheel. If they are too small there isn’t enough surface area to grip and also have to run too fast (heating up) so they wear your tires and if they are too large then the tyre can’t rest between the two and spread the load. We found the balance!  By enforcing the tightest of engineering tolerances, within the front roller we built an electric motor that can produce more than 2100 watts and 109 kph. This is enough to outride any cyclist! More than 500 times a second (@30kmph) it pulses/brakes to generate an accurate and smooth environment. To achieve this you will notice the 2 heavy duty cables that have to deliver up to 50amps of power as well as the accurate data points (without electromagnetic interference) back to the internal electronics, in all varying temperature/humidity environments. This is designed to simulates whatever input you desire, Manual inputs, Matching (Matchfiles) or Virtual. 


 

 

adjustability and grip:


To be fully adjustable for any size bike, both rollers where encased in a solid rigid box so when moved along the strong back eveything stayed to it’s designed position, including the integrity of staying stable as the platform. This is the heaviest part of the Matchrider and tolerances are critical to performance.  A real road doesn’t move under you, so nor can the Matchrider rollers. 


Our selected rubber material and the process which we use to place this material on the roller ensures maximum traction without any excessive wear to the tyre. (pressure spread over both rollers). You should expect no more tyre wear than from riding normally outdoors. Given the smooth surface and as with outdoors it is important to inflate tires to race pressure and this will assist to reduce tyre wear further….. and of course go faster!!


 

 
 
Strong back

strong back 


To replicate the same solid feeling indoor that a bike has when firmly on the ground, the platform must have absolute stability, be level and there can be zero flex. This is where the platform needs to be as solid as the ground. The Matchrider is built from the highest grade of solid aluminum billet and structurally supported by a single strong back at its core. When connecting its strong back to the front and rear plates we create a “H” making it structurally rigid from all angles. We then level the platform via 6 independently adjustable feet that can raise and lower the height at their position by (5mm hex) compensating for any uneven ground. There is a definitive fine line where compromise must make room for quality and we felt that without moving to CNC machined solid materials of both size and weight, it would not allow us to achieve the stability needed to ride as hard as you do on the road.


 

 
 
Rear wheels

The Matchrider is built as a platform to substitute the road, so it is solid at 35kg of precision machined aluminum and brass. Being 35kg, it is heavy to lift so we have added wheels which make it easy to manoeuvre. Simply lifting the front cradle and rolling into position, with or without the bike attached. For a smaller footprint these wheels are easily removed (multiple unit gym class) and secures the Matchrider solidly into place.


 

easy to store:


There are two ways to store the Matchrider, standing up in a closet or sliding it neatly under furniture. Being a rugged machine it isn’t fragile so lifting the front arm and sliding it vertically it can rest securely against a wall. Alternatively, remove the central clamp system (as this will reduce it’s hight to approx. 35cm) and now the Matchrider can easily slide under your furniture, out of the way. For many, who share the passion of cycling, it is a display of precision aesthetic machining so it is showcased openly in a favorite part of their home .

The history of Matchrider®  

 

Matchsports under our parent SBI MEDIA, an interactive sports & entertainment media group is the proud inventor of the “Matchrider”. That’s right a media group. The invention of the Matchrider evolved from work conducted going as far back as 2010 when we looked at introducing live streaming bike cameras from within the peloton at the World Tour level. These cameras are not simple cameras, they are live POV and performance data embedding sophisticated transmitters from which the Matchrider is designed to receive a live feeds and interact with in real time. 

 

Therefore in order to allow a bike to be ridden as if it was on a road whilst at the same time interactively receive LIVE streaming video with data feeds from bikes in another part of the world our task and problem to solve was clearly set. Step one had our team in search for the type of “home trainer/ exercise bike” that could rise to the challenge of being ridden like a bike out doors and keep up with the video and data at 50 frames per second. 

 

After extensive testing and evaluation of all available options, we quickly realized that over the course of the last decades there had been little if no innovation in this area. All comparable products tested fell short or simply could not do any of what was required and so the decision was made to invent something from a blank canvas and lift the bar. A platform that was good enough to ride as if you where on the road, within the race!

 

"We guess that this would be the point where most people in our position would have simply stopped". 

 

The number one challenge was to create a simulator that felt real, including feeling real to all your muscles, it had to engage the same muscle groups that you use when on the road and unless the bike moved under you, this simply would never work. Over 70+ prototype versions later and we had our solution. Achieved in part by our now patented Variable Spring Tension (VST) system, this is the system that gives you the adjustable freedom of movement. Once we achieved a safe, practical and adjustable system to allow the bike to move under you as on the road, we then moved to resolve another major challenge.

 

Engaging all the kinetic chain from head to toe so that you are really riding a bike. From there we moved to the electronics which in it self was a monstrous task. Understanding that with every part of a peddle stroke you are generating power wasn’t enough, we needed to know where that power went and as a result was it increasing or decreasing your overall speed. 5 years later we now have a Matchrider retail ready for home and commercial use with electronics designed from ground up to achieve the ultimate road simulation at the level of riding with live racing vision/data as per the original vision.

 

These files are packaged as Matchfiles. In future if the opportunity arises to introduce our Matchcams into the peloton the Matchrider will be ready to connect.
